The Edmund Burke Academy varsity baseball team played two games this past week, winning one and losing one. Unfortunately the loss on Tuesday, April 12, was to a region opponent, the Trinity Christian Crusaders. The win on Thursday, April 14, was against Westminster of Augusta and broke the seven game losing streak that the Spartans had found themselves in.

The Spartans traveled to Dublin last Tuesday in hopes of finding a much needed region win. However, the Trinity Crusaders were victorious over the Spartans with a final score of 11-8. Leading hitters were senior Will Dixon (2-4) and junior Trevor Sharpe (2-3). Grant Liles pitched 2/3 of the first inning, giving up 6 runs on 3 hits, a HB, and 3 BB. Senior Nathan Thompson came in and subsequently pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up 4 runs. Will Dixon then pitched 2/3 of an inning, giving up 1 run.

Coach Aaron Phillips said they played their worst game of the year against Trinity. He said, “We just did not have it today at all. They did not put any phase of the game together today."

Coach Phillips went on to say that many errors were committed on the defensive side of the game and the pitchers walked entirely too many batters. “We are still struggling to get the two out hits and Trinity gave us many opportunities to score runs and we just never capitalized,” said Phillips.

Thursday, April 14 proved to be a more successful day for the Spartans. The 3-2 win over Westminster on their home turf in Waynesboro was a much needed morale booster for the struggling Spartans. Senior Will Dixon had a stellar day and pitched a complete game, giving up only 2 runs on 4 hits, with 7 strike-outs. Leading hitters were Tyson Post (1-2), Landon Smith (1-3), and Kyler Deason (1-3). Coach Phillips said, “Defensively, we played a lot better and Will Dixon did a great job on the mound for us.”

The Spartans are currently 7-11 for the season and 3-6 in the region running. Yesterday, the Spartans faced a region opponent, the Pinewood Patriots, in Waynesboro on the EBA home field. Results of that game were not available at press time. Scores can be checked at the school’s website at www.burkeacademy.org.
