By Elizabeth Billips

GBI agents have released the identity of a dead man who was found in the Burke County woods on Sept. 25.

The deceased is the late Michael Alexander Jones, 27, of Augusta, and his death has been ruled a homicide.

“Everything leads us to believe the crime (homicide) took place in Burke County,” Pat Morgan, special agent in charge of Thompson GBI Office, said Tuesday.

Jones’ body, which had been partially concealed with tree branches, was discovered by a hunter who noticed buzzards flying in and out of a wooded area along the railroad tracks that bisect Watkins Pond Road in northern Burke County.

According to GBI agents, Jones’body had been there for several days and was in a “state of decomposition.”

Investigators have neither named a suspect nor said how Jones was killed.

The GBI and the Burke County Sheriff’s Office are continuing the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Burke County Sheriff’s Office at 706-554-2133 or the GBI Office at 706-595- 2575.
