Lady Spartans blaze by Briarwood

By Kim Bailey

The Lady Spartans traveled to Briarwood Academy last Tuesday to take on the Lady Buccaneers.

In a solid defensive showing, Edmund Burke Academy’s girls defeated the Lady Bucs 43-17.

“The girls shared the ball and played a well-rounded game,” said coach Larry Keller.

The Lady Spartans shot a season high 28 free throw attempts, sinking 18 of them. Amber Chambers led the Lady Spartans with 10 points and 8 rebounds, and Tinley Jenkins had 9 points and 6 rebounds.

“Madison Dickey has done a tremendous job running the point for us this year,” said Keller.

Dickey had 5 assists to go along with 5 points. “Freshman Hannah Powell played her best game of the year, with seven points and four rebounds,” Keller added.

In their second game of the week, the Lady Spartans fell to the Lady Cavaliers of Augusta Prep 48-34. EBA found themselves down 22 points at halftime. They narrowed the gap to 7 in the second half but couldn't catch up.

“We just didn’t come out ready to play,” said Coach Keller. “That’s my fault. I’ve got to do a better job of having them ready to play.” A strong second half by senior Chambers and eighth grader Marley Knight helped the Lady Spartans surge late in the game.

Chambers once again led the Lady Spartans in scoring and rebounds with 19 and 18, respectively. Knight had an impressive 5 points and 7 second-half offensive rebounds. Dickey added 5 points to the board.

The Lady Spartans will travel to Brentwood Academy this weekend.
