BCHS students earn athletic recognition

Untorrey Thomas and Bailee Adkins Untorrey Thomas and Bailee Adkins Burke County High School announced two students Bailee Michelle Adkins and Untorrey Cornelius Thomas were recently named School Winners for the prestigious Wendy’s ® High School Heisman® Award.

Adkins and Thomas were chosen for their excellence in academics, athletics and community leadership, and they will move on to the next round of judging to compete for the coveted national award.

“On behalf of Burke County High School, we are excited to celebrate and honor the outstanding athletic and scholastic achievements of Bailee and Untorrey with this prestigious award,” said Principal Sam Adkins.

The Wendy’s High School Heisman Award celebrates the achievements of the nation’s top high school seniors both in and out of the classroom. The award is recognized as the most esteemed award at the high school level and encourages future leadership by acknowledging wellrounded students.

Both Adkins and Thomas will be Honor Graduates in the Class of 2014, rank in the top 5 percent of their class, and are members of the National Honor Society and BETA Club. Both have attained exceptional GPAs and maintained their academic standing while taking Advanced Placement

(AP) and Honor level courses.

Athletically, Adkins is a fouryear letterman and starter for the Lady Bears softball team. She was named to the 2011 Honorable Mention All-Region Team and received the 2013 Coaches Award. Bailee is also a current 3-year letterman for the Lady Bears Women’s Golf team. The Golf Team is the three-time defending Region Champion and placed fifth in the 2013 Georgia State AAAA Championship. With golf season now underway, Adkins will contribute to a strong finish this season.

Thomas has been a standout on the Bears football team, most notably as a kicker and a receiver, and is a four-year starter and letterman. He contributed to four straight region championships and the 2011 State Championship. He has been selected First Team All- Region 3-AAAA for the past two seasons. Thomas was also named to the 2013 Augusta Chronicle All-Area Honorable Mention Football Team. Like Adkins, Thomas is also a two-sport athlete as a member of the Bears Basketball team. He will play football at LaGrange College next fall.

“The nationally recognized Wendy’s High School Heisman Award helps these high-achieving students to stand out in the increasingly selective college admissions process,” said Archie Griffin, the only two-time winner of the Heisman Memorial Trophy and Wendy’s High School Heisman program spokesperson. “These outstanding seniors across the country can use this award as a stepping stone towards continuing success and high achievements.”

One male and one female from each high school are selected from the nearly 48,000 applicants nationwide. From there, the pool will be whittled down until the two national winners are named at the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award Ceremony in New York City.
