Commissioners approve county budget

By Anne Marie Kyzer

Burke County’s $48 million spending plan for the coming year is official.

County commissioners voted unanimously to approve the fiscal year 2013 budget at a called meeting last Wednesday.

No one other than commissioners and county administrator Merv Waldrop attended the final public hearing, which lasted about seven minutes and ended without any further discussion.

Though the budget has been adopted and the fiscal year began Oct. 1, there could be amendments to come.

One day after the budget became official, the hospital authority announced a loan sought for funding operations there had been denied. Money from the county will be needed for the hospital while the authority seeks someone to lease or buy it.

Though commissioners have not yet come together to discuss the issue, County Commission Chairman Wayne Crockett said it’s possible to amend the budget and he anticipates the county will assist the hospital in some way.
