Relay For Life set for Friday night
Hundreds will lose sleep on Friday night to help win the battle against cancer.
The 2012 Relay For Life of Burke County is set to kick off at 6 p.m. as teams begin their overnight fundraising effort to benefit the American Cancer Society. The event, which is themed Reggae Relay, will be held at the Mr. Golf Carts warehouse facility (formerly Perfection- Schwank) on East Sixth Street in Waynesboro. Some 27 teams have been raising money for months, collecting more than $17,000 already and hoping to more than triple that amount by Relay’s end.
The event will get started with the opening ceremonies followed by the Survivors Lap, offering survivors a chance to circle the track in celebration of what they’ve overcome.
After dark, the Luminaria Ceremony will bring together participants as they walk the track illuminated by the bags in remembrance of those who have lost their battle with cancer.
Plenty of activities, contests and entertainment are on tap throughout the evening both on and off the track. Gobs of good eats will also be for sale, from sno-cones to shish kabobs and barbeque to low country boil, to raise even more funds.
Last year, Burke County raised more than $58,000 and honored 76 cancer survivors at its Relay.

*Admission to the event will begin at 6 p. m. All team members, cancer survivors, caregivers, families and other supporters will be admitted at no charge. However, children ages 17 and under who are not attending the event with their family or participating as a member of a team will be charged $10 and will not be allowed to remain at the event past 10 p. m.
