The Lady Bears picked up a road win in Statesboro last week.

Burke County High School’s volleyball team defeated Statesboro High School last Tuesday.

In the win, Heidi Lee and Ariel Roberson each had 4 aces, and Briana DeLaigle had 3 aces, 1 kill and 1 block. Kaila Bates pitched in with 2 aces and 2 kills.

Two days later, however, they fell victim to two strong Columbia County teams, Lakeside and Evans high schools.

“Playing against teams of such caliber was a great experience for us,” Burke County Coach Cristina Zdroba said. “Everybody knows that volleyball is an ‘air affair’ and the truth is that we are a relatively short team as far as height goes. So most of the time, it is difficult to play the offensive game we want to.”

Despite Burke County’s timid start with Evans (7-25, 11-25), the Lady Bears started to play stronger in the second match against Lakeside (11-25, 23-25).

“In the second game with Lakeside we took the lead for a while and the girls played hard and fought to win,” Coach Zdroba said. “We felt the absence of our main spiker Destiny Turner, who is injured and played only for a short while.”

Still, Coach Zdroba applauded her team’s effort and for giving Lakeside a battle.

The Lady Bears will play in the region tournament at Butler later this week.
