BOE hearing begin on tax increases

By Roy F. Chalker Jr. Publisher/Editor

The Burke County Board of Education will hold the first of three public hearings Wednesday Dec. 8 (today) on the two mil tax increase proposed by the panel.

Georgia law requires the public hearings before the panel can set the final rate. Today’s meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the school system’s central office at 789 Burke Veterans Parkway. Subsequent hearings will be on Dec. 15 at 9 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. The board will make its final decision on the matter after the last hearing.

A statement issued by the Board of Education this week indicated that local expenditures and fiscal responsibilities have steadily increased over the past several years while state and other revenues have declined, draining the system’s reserve funds.
