Luther Robinson, former POW, dies

Mr. Luther Oxyner Robinson, 84, of Waynesboro, Ga., died on Feb. 14, 2010, at MCG Hospital in Augusta, Ga.

The family will receive friends at a visitation on Thursday, Feb. 18, from 6 until 8 p.m. at DeLoach-McKerley Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Feb. 19, at 2 p.m. at Waynesboro First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sam Vernon officiating.

A reception at the church will follow. Interment will be private.

He was born on March 14, 1925 in Gough, Ga. Mr. Robinson is survived by his wife of 45 years, Doris Robinson of Waynesboro.

He also is survived by his six children, Roland Daniel (Tyler) of St. Simons Island, Ga., Marsha Hendrix (Boomer) of St. Simons Island, Hugh Robinson (Lorraine) of Waynesboro, John Bird Daniel (Elizabeth) of St. Simons Island, Mildred Moore (Randy) of Evans, Ga., and Stan Robinson (Jennifer) of St. Simons Island; eight grandchildren, John Wallace Daniel, Anne Daniel, Erin Daniel, Nick Robinson, Callie Daniel, Madden Robinson, John Porter Robinson and Stiles Robinson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Robinson was preceded in death by his parents, J.R. and Bessie Robinson, originally from Gough; his first wife, Moree Mixon; a brother, John Robinson; a sister, Mary Frances Miller; and a grandson, Jay Robinson.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps, and he was a former P.O.W.

Luther was a retired farmer and a rural mail carrier. He was an active member of Waynesboro First United Methodist Church and the Brinson- Coleman Sunday School Class, a member of the Masons and American Legion Post #120. He also served as a member of the Burke County Board of Education and was a member of Woodmen of the World.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Brinson-Coleman Sunday School Class and members of American Legion Post #120.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 420, Waynesboro, GA 30830.
