Charter passes in split-decision
Rejection likely
      After more than 20 months of arguments and delays, the Waynesboro City Council has finally signed off on their new charter. Only four of the six council members are behind the adoption, however, making rejection from local legislators a likely scenario.

Workforce shows slow gains
In Burke
      Burke County’s unemployment rate dipped slightly in December, closing out 2009 just below the state median. According to Georgia Department of Labor officials, Burke’s jobless pool was estimated at 10.9 percent for the month of December – compared to 11.3 percent a month earlier.

Frazier appointed to energy committee
      Representative Gloria Frazier of House District 123 (DHephzibah) has been appointed to the Energy, Utilities and Telecommunications Committee. She joins 25 fellow-members, including neighboring rep- resentatives Ben Harbin and Hardie Davis.

Burke parent appointed to statewide panel
      A Burke County parent will be helping the State Superintendent of Schools address education issues in Georgia. Mary Terrell Dukes was appointed to Superintendent Kathy Cox’s parent advisory council. Dukes was one of just 28 parents statewide tapped for this role. She was selected based on her active involvement in Burke County Public Schools.

Georgia Power CEO: Vogtle easy pick for new reactors
      Plant Vogtle was an obvious choice as the location for expanding Southern Company’s nuclear fleet, according to Georgia Power’s chief executive. Mike Garrett, Georgia Power president and CEO, spoke about the company’s expansion decision at the Burke County Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting last Thursday.

Council sets sights on Boys & Girls Club
      Waynesboro could get a Boys & Girls Club. Monday night, city officials announced plans to go after a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to rehab the old Head Start building for that purpose. “I think it’s perfect for what they need,” city administrator Jerry Coalson said of the cityowned building at Ninth and Walker streets.

      A local church is partnering with News Channel 6 to provide supplies to Haitians whose homes were lost in the Jan. 12 earthquake.

MCGHealth celebrates opening of cancer center
      Dozens of Burke County cancer patients have selected MCGHealth Medical Center in Augusta for treatment over the years. With the recent opening of a $31 million cancer center, those patients are experiencing a whole new level of care, according to administrative director Steve Black.
