Burke County High School’s boys basketball team (12-3) picked up two more region wins last week against Baldwin and Richmond Hill.

The victories marked the second time the Bears have beaten each of those teams.

In Burke County’s 56-52 win over Baldwin, Jacquez Rozier led in scoring with 20 points. He hit a season-high of 5 three-pointers during the game. Curtis Barber and Jahanas Harden followed with 9 points each, and Paul Atwell picked up another 8.

Head coach Purvis Dukes called it a “great road win” for the team.

“Baldwin played us extremely tough and we were glad to come away with the victory,” he said. “We trailed at the half by three points but fought back in the second half.”

The following night, the Bears pounded Richmond Hill 66-42.

“This was another big region win for us,” Coach Dukes said. “We had four guys in double figures and that’s a definite plus this time of year.”

Rozier had another big night, scoring 26 points and hitting two more three-pointers. Martaveous Smith added 12 points to the board for the Bears and Harden put up 10. Barber scored 11 points and sank 3 shots from the arch.

The Bears picked up steam defensively as well, only allowing the Wildcats 5 points in the second quarter.

Burke County will need to maintain that power as they head into a weekend of games against the only two teams in the region that have beaten them, Liberty County and Washington County high schools. Liberty County won by a margin of 6 points and WACO edged past the Bears 46-45. In both games, Burke County was missing one of its starters.

“We definitely have to have momentum as we go into a big weekend for region play,” Coach Dukes said.
