10 years ago: February 2, 2000

Jesse and Carol Palmer were named Citizens of the Year by the Burke County Chamber of Commerce. They were recognized for their work as the driving force behind the downtown beautification project.

Fiamm Technologies, an Italian-based company which manufactures sealed batteries for the telecommunications industry, announced plans to open a $30 million plant here.

Burke County’s unemployment rate stayed steady at 6.6 percent.

25 years ago: January 30, 1985

Piggly Wiggly Southern announced plans for a new 35,000 square foot store in downtown Waynesboro. The building would be located on a four acre site between Shadrack Street and Academy Avenue.

First National Bank of Waynesboro closed out 1984 with assets of $25,989,000.

St. Michael’s Episcopal Church held a luncheon honoring 11 new families who joined the congregation in the previous year.

50 years ago: February 4, 1960

Mrs. Carolyn TeBow retired after 50 years of nursing and 13 years of service at the Burke County Health Department.

Virginia Aubrey Bargeron was named winner of the Good Citizenship Medal presented by the Burke County Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.

75 years ago: February 1, 1935

“The Roosevelt Ball” raised $105 toward the fight against infantile paralysis (polio).

State officials were proposing a law requiring a state fishing license. The fee would be $1.60 per year.

Escaped Jefferson County convict Dock Allen was arrested for the burglary of the R.W. Hopper Store and Munnerlyn Post Office.

Marjorie Mincey was named Miss Waynesboro for 1935.
