Judge Ruffin
      As a young lawyer, John H. “Jack” Ruffin had to practice 10 years before he was invited to join the Augusta Bar Association. It’s the way things were in those days. But thanks in large part to Jack Ruffin, who died last week at the age of 75, things in Richmond and Burke Counties and all across the South didn’t stay that way much longer.

Looking Back
      10 years ago: February 2, 2000 Jesse and Carol Palmer were named Citizens of the Year by the Burke County Chamber of Commerce. They were recognized for their work as the driving force behind the downtown beautification project.

      During the years after Mama and Daddy retired from farming both of them learned to relax a bit. Daddy had his gardens and his flowers and grapes. He made many wreathes from the leftover grapevines. Mama still did plenty of cooking and also took up refunding as a hobby and spent hours looking for nickel and dime deals.

      Thanks, animal lovers Editor: At the top of my to-do list was to write a letter of thanks to several people in our community. Unfortunately, I have been very busy, and it wasn’t until my fortune in a cookie from an oriental restaurant reminded me to write a letter that I decided it was time to keep my promise.
