WPS Students Visit Pine Hill Schoolhouse
     WPS Students Visit Pine Hill Schoolhouse Waynesboro Primary School Kindergarten students from Mrs. Posey, Register, Rodgers, Russell and Williams' classes took a step back in time. As an introduction to a unit on long-ago and today, students visited the refurbished one room Pine Hill schoolhouse. They learned about the clothing, a student's typical day and games of long-ago. "Students returned to Waynesboro Primary School with a new appreciation for our school as it is today," said WPS kindergarten teacher Schylea Williams.

BCMS students win Georgia Essay Contest
      Burke County Middle School Georgia Essay contest participants joined together to enjoy an award ceremony and refreshments recently. The Georgia Essay contest was a writing contest to promote writing and research by the Georgia Visitor Information Center.

Georgia Day at WPS
     Second-grade students celebrated Georgia Day recently as they "traveled across the state" by going to centers related to different facts about Georgia. In the media center they played Jeopardy and answered questions about Georgia. The students sampled foods, such as peanuts, peaches, grits, Coca-Cola and Vidalia onions. In the gym they learned about the Masters Golf Tournament, and were given the opportunity to putt a golf ball. They also learned how to square dance and make a Cherokee Rose. Ginger Jenkins, WPS music teacher, gave the students a chance to get down and boogie to songs by different artists from Georgia. Matt Shryock, BCMS eighth-grade Georgia studies teacher, told students about the Cherokee and Creek tribes.

BCMS Cubs with Character
     Burke County Middle School has named the following students "Cubs with Character" for the month of October for exemplifying the character traits of bravery, cleanliness, loyalty and fairness: from left, front row: sixth graders, Willis Tolbert, Kendricka Walker, Michaela Pollex, Emily Long, Amari Ray, Tyler Roberson and Hector Guerrero; middle row: seventh graders, Jamel Wilson, Keylon Boyd, Justin Hodge, Lauren Conner, Shanterial Heath, Brandon Beasley, Sawiyah Griffin, Janell Williams, Gabrielle Wright and Devon Stone; and back row: eighth graders, Taylor Kicklighter, Shenequle Wright, Brandy Jones, Samantha Zwick, Kimberly Mack, Janzas Lewis, Chiquita Jones, Brandon Cherry, Kyandre Wright and Dwayne Moten. BES Positive Behavior Incentive
     At the beginning of the school year, the Blakeney Elementary School Positive Behavioral Support Committee (PBS) challenged all BES students to meet their new "Positive Behavior Incentive." In order to qualify, students must have a "B" average or higher in conduct and no office or bus referrals at the end of the 9-weeks grading period. Seven hundred and twenty four out of 863 students met their "Positive Behavior Incentive." Qualifying students were treated to a fun filled Friday afternoon on the BES playground. Students were given the opportunity to play games, socialize with their friends and dance to their favorite songs, which were provided by DJ Donna Barlow. The PBS committee wrapped up the exciting day by drawing nine student names to receive $20 Wal- Mart gift cards. Students honored included, Malik Gibbons, Tierrdreya Miles, Destiny Spencer, Jackson Parham, Lester Martin, Sierrah Vickrey, Jacy Royal, Jaheel Roundtree and Matthew Frey.

SGA Helps Families Prepare for the CRCT
     SGA Elementary hosted an event called Pizza Pi Night Thursday, Nov. 5. One hundred and twenty-three students and parents enjoyed a fun-filled evening of mathematical pleasure. A short keynote presentation by the principal Sam Adkins was followed by small group sessions organized by math CRCT domains that guided participants through various activities intending to strengthen mathematical application, problem solving and communication skills through family interaction.

BCMS Math Challenge
     Burke County Middle School students participated in a Math Challenge Competition on Nov. 10. Students with the highest math average in each homeroom were chosen as competitors. The purpose of the Math Challenge is to give students experience in a math competition in a relaxed and familiar atmosphere and instill a desire to be the best they can be in all they do. This competition was one of two preliminaries; the winners will then be invited to a third competition in February. "It was a good experience for all participants, helping prepare them for Math Fest in Riverdale, Georgia on March 20, 2010," said Ruthie Loftin BCMS Discovery teacher. Math Mania
     SGA Elementary School students competed in a "Math Mania" competition. Every student participated in their grade level competition. Brandi Holland, SGA Discovery teacher, said "The Math Mania competition is an initiative set up by the Discovery Program and SGA's School Quality Team to build interest in math while making learning fun." This is SGA's second math competition of the year, leaving them with only one more competition to complete. Winners from all three competitions will compete in the county competition on Feb. 17 and 18, held at Blakeney Elementary School. Dress up
     Students from Christy Palmer's first-grade class at Waynesboro Primary School dressed up as their favorite story book character and wrote and presented informative speeches to their classmates. To help make the presentations really come alive, Palmer constructed make-believe television for the students to sit in as they presented their speeches. Above, Mary Catherine Jackson presented her speech dressed as her favorite character, "Fancy Nancy."

Youth Songfest
     A youth songfest is on tap for this Sunday Nov. 29, 4-6 p.m., at the John I. Blackburn Worship Center at 4778 Quaker Road, Keysville. The spiritual-educational activity is sponsored by Westminster Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro and will feature the Rock Creek Youth Choir, along with Pastor Tracy Brown and the CSRA Youth Mass Choir, pictured above. A meal with be served, and the public is encouraged to attend.

My buddy
     This year's buddy readers have included members of the Burke County High School football team, color guard and FBLA. WPS hopes to include the BCHS Health Club, golf team, and boys and girls basketball teams for future dates. The students came over last month and read Halloween stories and paraded through the halls to Ghostbusters, Thriller and Monster Mash. "Our students here at WPS really enjoy the Buddy Readers coming to read to them every month. They are always so excited and ask lots of questions of the high school students," said Casey Randolph, WPS kindergarten teacher. Teachers at WPS believe this is a wonderful program that benefits the WPS students as well as high school students.
