College students caught in fraudulent check scam
      A Waynesboro police officer was assaulted last week after a group of college students tried to cash fraudulent checks at Wal-Mart. According to Chief Investigator Gene Boseman, store employees called for help last Wednesday night when a group of young adults, mostly from South Carolina, presented several forged checks from Greenville Technical College.

Attack on women ends with arrest
      A Louisville man was arrested for pushing a woman down the steps, shooting at another and then retreating into the woods with an ax. Allen Jenkins, 55, was jailed Friday night after an alcoholrelated fracas at his Bailey Road home ended in gunfire.

Lost shoe could lead to gunmen
In Del-Mac hold-up
      A money bag and shoelaces weren't on the to-do list for two robbers who held a Del-Mac Minute Mart clerk at gunpoint. The gunmen got away, but Waynesboro police say they left a trail of money and a lost shoe. The East Sixth Street convenience store was robbed by two unidentified black males around 6:55 p.m. last Tuesday.

      Bus-ted Two moms may be in trouble, pending footage recorded on Burke County school buses. According to reports filed at the sheriff's office, officers will be reviewing footage from a stop on Pecan Grove Drive where a 26-year-old mother allegedly yelled and cursed at a 10-yearold boy who she said had beaten up her child.

Pit bull owner gets prison sentence for fighting dogs
      Michael Vick got a much lighter prison sentence than a pit bull owner who faced dog fighting charges in Burke County Superior Court last week. Lenwood Heath Jr., 26, received a five-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to one count each of cruelty to animals and dog fighting.

Judge vows to put burglars behind bars
      A Superior Court Judge who handles cases in Burke County has a message for those who stand before him charged with burglary. Jail time is certain. Judge James G. Blanchard said he does not plan to sentence defendants to strictly probation if they are charged with burglary or related crimes such as theft by receiving stolen property.

Bond denied for hit and run suspect
     A Horry County judge denied bond for a Burke County woman accused of running over two women during a purse snatching. Katherine Michelle Johnson, 31, was arrested earlier this month in connection with a Nov. 9 incident in which she allegedly stole a purse from a 73-yearold woman at a Myrtle Beach K-Mart, then ran over her and a 51-yearold good Samaritan while trying to get away. The 51-year-old remains in critical condition. According to news media there, a judge denied bond for her charges of assault and battery with intent to kill. For purse snatching and leaving the scene of an accident, bond was set at $25,000 and $100,000, respectively. Johnson was arrested on the job Nov. 10 at Bankers Insurance and Casualty after deputies here received an anonymous tip.
