Giving thanks in tough times
      Every school child knows that the tradition of Thanksgiving started with the Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620. But a lot of us don't know the details of that event and how their small celebration evolved into the institution it is today.

      It's that time of year when we stuff ourselves silly with all the delicious Thanksgiving foods. It is also the time we pause to give thanks for the bountiful feast we enjoy and the many, many blessings. There have been some tough days financially in many lives lately with the economic downturn.

      10 years ago: November 24, 1999 A two-hour standoff between police and a man with a .45-caliber handgun ended peacefully in a yard near Blakeney Elementary School. It turned out that the gun held by Michael Paul Cooper was unloaded.

      When Mama died and the remainders and reminders of her life had to be sorted, distributed and, in some rare incidences, disposed of, my sister, Louise, and I marveled constantly at the historian that Mama was. She was a prodigious note writer, leaving behind her a vast and varied trail of torn pieces of paper with ink written notes scattered hither and yon.

I WANT TO BE A FIREMAN (PART II)
      There was a fire siren on top of the Sardis water tank. It was blown whenever a fire was reported. That's when we volunteers went running. The siren worked well during the day, but at night a problem occurred. The siren awoke the whole town and many citizens jumped in their cars and went looking for the fire.

Giving back to the community
      Editor: The Magnolia Acres Community Empowerment Committee (MACEC), 1st Families of Magnolia Acres in Waynesboro held its first meet and greet gathering with the residents of Magnolia Acres on Saturday, November 14, 2009. The Youth and families came out with full support of this event, grilled hot dogs, drinks and snacks were enjoyed by all.
