Bears beat Raiders to make state playoffs
      The Bears decided they weren't ready to put away their pads for the season. Burke County High School snatched a spot in the playoffs from West Laurens last Friday in Dexter with a 42-35 victory. Both teams had entered the match up with a 2-3 region record and the winner laid claim to the number four seed from 3- AAA.

Bears finish in top half at state meet
      Burke County High School's cross country runners beat about half of the state's top runners to the finish line Saturday. Alaytra Carswell and Darius Lakes each finished 101st at the AAA State Meet in the girls and boys divisions, respectively.

EBA advances to quarterfinals
Defense dominates in first round win
      The Spartans guaranteed themselves a date with No. 1 Sherwood Christian in the GISA AA state quarterfinals after beating Arlington Christian Friday night. Edmund Burke struck early in the game with a huge run up the middle by Brandon Sharpe, setting up first and goal for the Spartans.

I finally got one!
     Greg James killed an 8-point weighing in at 188 pounds on Oct. 18, while hunting with his friend Brent Smith in Girard. Greg is the son of Shirley Ann James and the late Greg James Sr. of Waynesboro. Greg says it was "an experience (he) will never forget."

Travel team picks up wins in SC tournament
     A travel baseball team from Burke County finished second in the Ga-Lina Boo Ball Tournament held in Aiken over the Halloween weekend. The team, comprised of local middle and high school players, competed in the 14 and under bracket and finished with a record of 2-1-1. Their only loss was to the top-ranked team in Georgia, a 1-0 loss in 6 ½ innings. The team is coached by Larry Keller, Tyler Torek and Scott Gay. Team members are from left, front row: Martin Jarrett, Jordan Keller, Dalton Quick, Dylan Hanley and Brice Tucker; and back row: Shelton Middleton, Rusty Gay, Kevin Cook, Bobby Gay, Seth Torek and CJ Tidwell.
