      10 years ago: November 10, 1999 Chamber of Commerce executive director Ashley Long traveled to Flint, Mich., to encourage workers in the new Helmac Products plant to live in the community. Kori Bowers and Amy Story were selected as All-Star Cheerleaders by the Universal Cheerleaders Association.

MINING FOR WORDS
      Milestones. I like most milestones, but even the ones I don't particularly care for, I still pay attention to. For instance, I'll always remember the exact date and time that I crashed my motorcycle and spent the next year recovering. I base time frames for other life events by whether they happened " before the wreck" or "after the wreck".

      There is a story that my daddy used to like to tell about me. It happened when I was eight or nine. One morning I ran outside to meet him as he was returning from his barn chores. "I need eight dollars to pay for the new books that I'm ordering," I told him. In grammar school, we would receive catalogs from the teachers, pick out books we wanted then order them.

Thanks, Sheriff!
      Editor: I would like to personally thank the Burke County Sheriff's Office for doing a tremendous job. On several occasions I have come home from work to find a card left in my door stating the sheriff's office had been by doing routine security checks on my property. That makes my day a lot easier, knowing our sheriff's office is doing all they can do to keep us safe.

      Editor: Forty-one precious little bibs recently hung in the city park to remember the 41 precious lives lost to infant mortality in the past 10 years in Burke County. These bibs also represent 41 bereaved families who will always treasure in their hearts the memories of their babies.

America, love it or leave it
      Editor: I was reading a letter in a newspaper, and I have to write this letter to the editor and the people of Burke County. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Australia, told Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia Law that they need to get out of Australia and live in another part of the world as your new home because God is part of our culture.
