Early voting begins in four cities
Midville election canceled
      Early voting for four local elections will get underway next Tuesday while the non-contested race in Midville will be decided without a trip to the polls. According to Midville Election Superintendent Fran Watson, the Nov. 3 election has been cancelled for unopposed city council candidates Jack L. McLendon and Samuel Lee Cummings.

      The schools are getting creative when it comes to convincing youngsters to eat their veggies. They're using folks they know and look up to provide the ex- ample. In a campaign to encourage healthy eating habits, local principals, coaches, teachers and athletes have become the poster children of gobbling good food.

Balloon release scheduled at Brentwood
for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
      Think pink. That's what residents and staff at Brentwood Health and Rehabilitation are doing this month, and they'd like to encourage the Burke County community to do the same. This Friday, Oct. 9, at 10 a.m., the nursing facility will hold a balloon release recognizing October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Food on the brain
     All thoughts were on food Saturday at the Burke County Library's grand opening for the Smithsonian's Key Ingredients: America by Food traveling exhibit. Above, brothers Lucious and R.C. Abrams take a break from their live Art of Barbeque demonstration to pose for a photo with Arden Williams of the Georgia Humanities Council and librarian Elaine Sikes. More than 100 folks sampled the brothers' famous barbeque, along with cakes and pies made by their sister Frances Ross and the library staff. More food fun is on slate for this Saturday, Oct. 10 with 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. live Lowcountry cooking courses from Burke County native and Charleston chef Emily Kimbrough. There's also a day planned for local kids during their school holiday Monday. At 2 p.m., Jennifer Mooney will hold a gingerbread house building workshop; at 3:30 Terri Black will host an ice cream making workshop; and at 4:30 p.m. beekeeper Edwin Stephens will give a "bees and honey" demonstration.

Judge Daniel honored for efforts in community
      Burke County's State Court Judge has been recognized for his work in this community. Judge Jerry Daniel received the "Heroes in the Fight—Community Supporter" award from Mental Health America of Georgia at a recent banquet in Atlanta.
