More ... As National 4-H Week is celebrated across America, youth in Burke County feel the program's presence as strong as ever. Each year, hundreds of local youngsters participate in 4-H camps, competitions and other activities that focus on developing life skills and gaining knowledge through hands-on experiences. From agricultural projects to fine arts, the scope of the 4-H program includes a wide variety of choices to satisfy nearly every interest. Above, Dr. Frank Carter of Waynesboro is pictured with April and Jennifer McDaniel at State 4-H Congress. Dr. Carter has been a longtime supporter of local and state 4-H programs and sponsors a scholarship that is awarded annually. April was presented with the Edmund and Jo Ann Taylor 4-H Memorial Scholarship at the event and honored for her work as a counselor over the summer. Jennifer placed third in the state with her project in entomology after taking winning top prize at the district competition. More ... Oct. 19 - Parent Night - Burke Co. Office Park - 6 p.m. More ... Mead Cattle Enterprises was a stop on the Upson County Extension Office Farm Tour last weekend. Owner Tommy Mead, along with his wife Robin and mother Hazel, hosted a group of guests from the other side of the state, and Mead shared the history of his farm which began as his 4-H project as he was growing up. The farm has since grown into one of the largest registered Hereford operations in the Southeast. He showed the group several pastures of calving cows, open and bred heifers and the bull battery. He also explained how the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service contributed to the farm by helping deal with heavy use areas and fenced off ponds to protect wildlife habitats.
