Football season begins this week for Burke County, Edmund Burke
They've run drills, lifted weights and pounded out plays all summer. Now it's time to see what they do when it matters most - game time. Most public and private high schools across Georgia will begin regular season play Friday night. The Bears will take on Effingham County High in Springfield, and Edmund Burke will travel to Thomson to play Briarwood Academy. More...

Girard could be home to Burke County's only liquor stores. If all goes as planned, Girard voters will decide in a Nov. 3 special election whether to allow package sales in the city. According to election superintendent Jennie Johnson, more than 80 Girard residents have signed off on a petition in support of the sales. More...

A study released last week shows that Burke County graduates have selected Augusta Technical College more than any other for postsecondary education over the last several years. Laura Stone has done it again. Saturday night, the Waynesboro native beat out 20 other contestants to be crowned Miss Atlanta. In the process, she cinched the evening wear competition and won the talent competition with her classical piano performance. Laura's win earns her a third trip to the Miss Georgia Pageant in June 2010. The University of Georgia graduate made top-10 appearances for the state title in 2008 and 2009, finishing most recently as third runner up. She is pictured with pageant princesses Anna Marie and Sally Kate Blackburn, who accompanied her as part of a mentoring program. More...

Two more wanted
Two people have been arrested for burglary, and two more are wanted. Melissa Rose Clark, 42, was jailed Saturday after Waynesboro police investigators identified her and 48-year-old Andrew "Monkey" Farmer in security footage from an August 17 burglary at Burkehaven Corner Store on West Sixth Street. Ruth Flakes, 72, of Girard, Ga., entered into rest on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, at her home. Funeral services were at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, at Bethlehem Baptist Church in, Girard with the Rev. Mike Jones officiating. Interment followed at Bethlehem Baptist Cemetery. More...

Local banks have gotten on board with the season ticket drive for the Waynesboro-Burke Concert Series 2009-2010 performances. Season tickets may be now be purchased from Capital City Bank, First National Bank, Queensborough Bank, Regions Bank and Southern Bank in Waynesboro and Sardis, as well as through concert members. One $40 season pass provides one adult ticket for each of the season's four performances. Those who purchase "friend level" season passes get four tickets for each performances, a name in each program and an invitation to the gala kick-off party in September. East Georgia College has garnered more support for plans to establish a site in Waynesboro. The Burke County Development Authority voted unanimously Tuesday to provide up to $1,500 monthly for utilities to help the school establish its newest location. More...
