Planters EMC accepting grant applications

From local non-profits
From Staff Reports

A weak economy is often tough for non-profit groups. Donations may be slow and fundraisers a little less fruitful than before.

One local organization, however, is eager to help and invites non-profits in Burke County to come their way for assistance in funding their programs.

Planters Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) members have been in the business of helping their neighbors with grants through the Operation Round Up program since 2006.

The Operation Round Up program awards grants every three months to local non-profit and educational organizations. Members of Planters EMC provide the money for the program by rounding their electric bills up to the nearest dollar and giving the difference back to the community.

Over the past three years, more than $170,000 in grants has been awarded to non-profits mostly in Burke, Screven and Jenkins counties.

Recently, though, applications from organizations in Burke County have dropped significantly.

"It is surprising that we have not received more applications from nonprofit organizations during this economic slow down," Planters EMC general manager Matt Brinson said. "Operation Round Up is a good source for some of the funding for specific projects that an organization might undertake in the community."

During the last series of Operation Round Up grants, Planters EMC members provided funds to Augusta Technical College's adult education program for scholarships to GED students and have awarded grants in the past to a prison ministry, center for children with special needs as well as youth education and outreach programs. Planters EMC leaders hope to help more groups like these with Operation Round Up grants in the future.

Nearly $15,000 total was granted to groups in Burke, Screven and Jenkins counties in April and another round of grants will be awarded this summer.

The process and applications are simple, and past recipients are welcomed to apply again.

Applications must be returned by July 10. For more information or to apply, visit www.plantersemc.com or call 478-982-4722.
