Lee Jones, 44, was doing custodial work in the sheriff's office when he slipped away.

Sgt. Dan Lowe, an investigator for the Burke County Sheriff's Office, said Jones has been in jail since July 2008 when he was arrested by Waynesboro police

According to the original incident report, Jones was detained after he refused to stop at a routine roadblock. When officers learned the North Carolina man was intoxicated and was behind the wheel of a stolen SUV, a struggle ensued and Jones tried to get away. He was charged with numerous violations, including felony obstruction for striking two officers.

Sgt. Lowe said Jones had been a trustee without incident for quite some time. Officers believe he may be trying to make his way up to Charlotte where his girlfriend, who had also been arrested in the incident, is now living following her recent release from jail.

Jones is described as 5'4, 135 pounds and was last seen wearing a white jail uniform with BCSO printed on the back.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call deputies at 706-554-2133.
