All Star camp accepting applications
      Final applications are now being evaluated for the Ten Star All Star Summer Basketball Camp. The camp is by invitation only for boys and girls ages 10- 19. Past participants include Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Vince Carter, Jerry Stackhouse, Grant Hill and Antawn Jamison.

Spartan cheerleaders steal spotlight at camp
     The Edmund Burke Academy varsity cheerleaders went to the Fellowship of Christian Cheerleaders Camp in Waleska June 2-5. They were selected as Camp Champs after beating out around 30 other squads and were invited to compete in the national competition in Orlando over the New Year's holiday. They are Lily Broome, Brooke Hargrove, Laney Lewis, Taylor Meadows, Anna Ready, Sammy Seay, Ashley Chambers, Lauren Chancey, Jessica Herrmann, Bailey Evans, Bailie Ruffo, Ashlee Smith, Dylan Smith, Jessica Story and Stevie Seay. In addition to winning the overall competition, seven of EBA's cheerleaders were named to the twelve member Camp All Star team. They include Broome, Hargrove, Lewis, Smith, Ready, Sammy Seay and Meadows.

All-star midget boys snag second in tourney
     The all-star midget boys team (12 and under) representing the Burke County Recreation Department brought home a second place finish from a pre-season tournament held in Lyons last week. Around 20 teams were in the bracket competing with Burke County's young baseball standouts. The team ended their season at the district tournament in Statesboro when they were eliminated with two losses on Monday. The Burke County team includes, from left, front row: Dylan Hanley, Bryson Tucker, Bo Goodin, Kolton Lee, Will Dixon and Hunter Reeves; and back row: coach Jim Johnson, Jay Johnson, Zach Paulk, Seth Torek, Rusty Gay, Ellis Sherrod, Coach Rhett Smith, Aaron Weeks and coach Sam Goodin.

Martin attends baseball camp
     Zachary Martin, 9, attended the Robert Sapp Baseball Camp held at Sweetwater Park in Thomson, May 25-29. Zach brought home a third place award for fielding in the 9-11 age division.

Tennis camp
     Camp isn't just for kids. Nearly 20 adults spent last week swinging racquets during summer tennis camp at Bide- A-Wee Plantation. The camp was headed up by instructor John MacDonald of Waynesboro with help from visiting pro Leo Katz of Crystal River. Above, Hillary Chance returns a serve. A junior day camp, below, was held in conjunction with the grown-up version. A place to sit
     Onecare, parent company of Evercare, donated two bleachers to the Burke County Recreation Department for their soccer fields. The bleachers can each hold about 75 to 90 people each. Pictured are Candace Michnuk, customer service/compliance manager for Onecare, her daughter Olina Michnuk, a Recreation Department soccer player, and Corey Dent, the athletic manager for the rec. dept.
