Whose Lake is it anyway?
      In this week's "Over the Fence" an anonymous reader has volunteered to assume ownership of Jones Lake, if the city council wants to give it away. The only suggestion we have for the reader is, be careful what you wish for. The lake has been causing headaches for city officials and private property owners for over half its 50- year existence.

      Have you noticed all the summer flowers on display throughout Waynesboro? Burkeland Garden at the corner of Liberty and Ninth streets gets more and more beautiful each year. A project of the Burkeland Garden Club and the City of Waynesboro, this garden is a welcoming site to visitors and locals.

      10 years ago: June 23, 1999 Burke County Sheriff Greg Coursey was appointed to the Georgia Board of Public Safety by Governor Roy Barnes. CVS Pharmacy began a one-time film developing service. Wendell Smith succeeded Bill Hawkins as supervisor of the local Juvenile Probation and Parole office.

SOPHIA AND THE FAMILY REUNION
      Down in Milledgeville, Georgia, there is a lovely woman named Sophia who is a fan of this column. In turn, she is a supporter and friend of mine. Now, Sophia has an absolutely kind habit that she practices weekly. She clips my column from the newspaper, makes 20 copies of it, writes 20 notes and addresses 20 envelopes to various relatives.

YE OLE SWIMMING HOLE
      Swimming is a great exercise. It is both enjoyable and refreshing. It is certainly a clean sport, and there are plenty places in which to swim. I have always enjoyed swimming. Even in my old age I continue to swim, especially on those hot summer days.

      Stop the drag racing Editor: Can anyone offer a suggestion? For months now people has been drag racing up and down Claxton Lively Road. We, and several others, have reported this to the Sheriff's Office, but nothing has been done.

SELF DEFEATING BEHAVIOR
      A number of years ago, my wife's Aunt Cathy needed to take the family's truck in for servicing. She lived in a small town in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Northern California. The closest city for major automobile servicing was about 35 miles away, in the town my wife's family lived.
