The Bears defeated Thomson twice on the golf course last week by about 30 strokes in each match. Burke County High School's boys traveled to Belle Meade Country Club last Thursday, where they finished with a total of 152, 28 strokes under Thomson on 9 holes. More ... Burke County was on the verge of its first region win on the baseball diamond, but the seventh inning against Washington County only brought disappointment. The Bears (2-10, 0-4) fell 5-3 to Washington County (6-7, 2-2) at home last Friday. The two teams were tied 3-3 at the top of the seventh. More ... Burke County High School's tennis teams will play their last regular season matches on Thursday when they travel to Thomson High School. The girls and boys teams, both 3-1 in the region, will then focus on the playoffs scheduled for April 14 for the girls and April 16 for the boys. The region playoffs will be hosted by Richmond Hill High School. Burke County welcomed Washington County for a region match yesterday (Tuesday), but results were not available at press time. He won in a unanimous decision last Saturday, claiming the Regional Golden Gloves title. Divante, who is just 16 years-old, beat the number 9 ranked boxer in the country, Rosey Summerville, advancing him to the National Golden Gloves tournament in Salt Lake City. More ... The Spartan baseball team (6- 2, 1-1) showed no mercy on Curtis Baptist last week as they dealt a nasty 16-1 blowout to the Crusaders. Michael Weaver and Jamie Smith dominated at the plate, combining for 5 hits and 7 RBIs. Brandon Sharpe also led the Spartans offensively, going 2 for 3. More ... Both the Spartans and Lady Spartans defeated Thomas Jefferson Academy last week on the tennis court. The guys shut out the Jag- uars, who were forced to forfeit all three singles matches. Doubles partners Jim Sandeford and Wilson Blanchard won 6-2, 6-0. Ross Daniel and Cody Ashe won their match 6-3, 6-1. More ... The Spartans and Lady Spartans ran in their second track meet of the season last week at Bulloch Academy. Edmund Burke competed against seven other schools. Every school in their region was present except for Frederica Academy. More ... The Edmund Burke Academy golf team won its third match of the season last Monday. The Spartans beat Robert Toombs Christian Academy by 40 strokes, recording a 373 as a team. Jake Evans turned in Edmund Burke's lowest score of 87. The Spartans lost in a non-region match three days later. Augusta Prep shot 300 to Edmund Burke's 377. Dawson Atkinson was low scorer for Edmund Burke, shooting an 86 for the day. The 8,100-acre property will be available for hunting gobblers through the end of the season on May 15. More ... An annual tournament will memorialize the most successful golfer to hail from Waynesboro. The inaugural Stiles Mitchell Four Ball is set for Saturday and Sunday, April 4-5, at the Waynesboro Country Club and will be held each year the week before The Masters Tournament in Augusta. More ... Three Burke County Boxing Club members turned heads at the Georgia Golden Gloves in Kingsland. Nine-year-old Shemar Lovett, left, who weighed in at 55 lbs., placed first in his division. According to club director OJ Frazier, the elementary school student sealed the championship after only one year of training at the club. Burke County High School graduate Marcus Middleton, center, was named runner-up after taking a big win in the first round of the Golden Gloves. Frazier said Middleton is currently ranked second in the state for his division. Augusta Technical College student James Johnson, right, suffered his first loss after pounding in four consecutive wins, two by knockouts. Approximately 25 children and adults, both male and female, train at the club, which is headquartered in a county building on Wallace Street. According to Frazier, the club is open four nights a week to anyone who wants to train or volunteer. Currently, volunteers are needed for everything from weight training to paperwork. "You don't have to know anything about boxing to help," Frazier said. More ... |
