The Bears are looking for some region wins. The Burke County boys (7-6, 1-4) lost region ballgames to Washington County and Thomson over the weekend. But with both games lost in the last seconds, head coach Purvis Dukes maintains that his players have the ability to compete with any team in the region. More ... The Lady Bears snagged their first region win Saturday night in Thomson. Burke County's girls (2-12, 1- 4) defeated the Lady Bulldogs 47-44 and saw three Lady Bears score in double digits. The Burke County girls have stepped it up in 2009, winning two of their last five games. Two of the defeats were lost in overtime. More ... A former football player and coach for Burke County has been named Georgia's AAAA Coach of the Year. Keysville native Franklin Stephens was selected for the honor by the Georgia Sports Writers Association after his Tucker Tigers won the AAAA state championship this past season. More ... Christian Posey, 12, of Waynesboro killed her first buck on Dec. 4 in Burke County. She got the eight-pointer while hunting with her papa, Jimmy Posey. Christian also killed two does this season. More ... Edmund Burke suffered a drop in standings this week with three losses, all to region opponents. Last Tuesday, the Spartans (10-9, 1-4) battled Curtis Baptist at home, seeking revenge from an earlier season loss to the Crusaders. The Crusaders struck first and took an early lead. That lead grew each quarter until the final buzzer when the Spartans fell by 7. More ... The Lady Spartans (8-13, 2- 3) suffered two region losses this week before picking up a big win over region foe, Memorial Day School. Last Tuesday, the Curtis Baptist Crusaders beat Edmund Burke 54-22. "Curtis is tall, athletic and quick. They can dribble the ball and shoot well. All in all, they are a solid team," head coach Todd Layton said. More ... Junior Kyle Wilson scored 13 points, a career high, against Memorial Day School, who is ranked first in Region 2-AA. Senior Kayla Milligan also scored a career high on Saturday against Memo- rial, posting 29 points. She sank 6 threepointers during the game. More ...
