Someone went for a ride over the weekend - literally. A mystery vehicle sailed nearly 100 feet after going airborne on the bypass, striking the Burke County Recreation Department's sign and causing thousands of dollars in damage. At right, tire marks show the point of impact where deputies believe the vehicle hit the embankment, left the ground and smacked the sign, shown in the distance and again up close, lower right. According to Cpl. Jamie Tanner of the Burke County Sheriff's Office, whoever was inside the vehicle apparently cleaned up the accident and left the scene without filing a report. He said the person or persons did, however, fail to pick up all the vehicle pieces, including what appeared to be part of a luggage rack. Cpl. Tanner said because of that, he thinks the vehicle may have been an SUV. "It was probably a heavier vehicle because of the distance … they really went for a ride," he said, adding that Burke Medical Center reported no injuries over the weekend that appeared to be in relation to the accident. "I couldn't believe it," he continued, saying that because of the way the accident appeared, he couldn't imagine someone not sustaining injury. Recreation dept. officials say they received a tip that a silver Jeep Cherokee caused the damage. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at 706-554-2133. The sign was valued at $9,100, the report said. More...
