Bears slay the Warriors again
      The rivals next door won't savor any victories over the Bears this basketball season. The Burke County Bears (6-3) put away the Jefferson County Warriors with a 65-62 win last Saturday. The non-region game marked the second and final match-up of the two teams this season. The Bears buried the Warriors 72-59 the first time.

Lady Bears start new year right
      Their coach said it was exactly what they needed. A come-from-behind 59-54 win over Jefferson County last Saturday gave the Burke County Lady Bears (1-9) their first win of the season and something to feel good about. Head coach Angelica Collins said her Lady Bears played like she knew they could and she hoped this would give them the confidence to topple more teams.

Spartans, Lady Spartans take on region foes
      As 2009 begins, the Spartans and Lady Spartans start their region play on the basketball court. Both teams will face region foe Frederica Academy this Friday in St. Simons, with the girls' game beginning at 6 p.m. On Saturday, they'll face the Matadors of Memorial Day in Savannah, with the girls tipping off at 2 p.m.

Bears earn all-state honors
      Two of Burke County's Bears were named among the state's top AAA football players. Junior quarterback Terrell Brigham and senior wide receiver Bobby Burum both received honorable mentions on Georgia's Associated Press all-state team for Class AAA.
