Mr. Cyril Marchinton Cyril Marchinton, 101, passed away Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008. He was born on Sept. 17, 1907 in London, England. His parents, Reginal and Elizabeth Gretton Marchinton moved the family to Nova Scotia in 1909. Cyril was a young schoolboy there at the time of the Halifax Explosion. The family moved to DeLand, Fla., in 1919. He worked in the orange groves, packing house and construction and helped build schools in New Smyrna Beach, Mt. Dora, Daytona and DeLand as well as the Masonic Temple in DeLand. When the banks closed in 1929 he trapped for fur and hunted alligators until other jobs opened up. He co-owned the Chevrolet Dealership in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., from the late 1930s to 1954, owned the Floreco Crab Plant in Edgewater for the next eight years, and was a board member of First Federal Savings & Loan (now Regions Bank) from 1946 to 2000. He was an active member and Sunday School teacher at the First Methodist Church in New Smyrna for more than 70 years. He had a saw/tool sharpening business for his last 30 years in New Smyrna Beach. Still working and driving at age 98, he retired for the last time in 2005, moving to Jackson County, Ga., to be with his son, Larry Marchinton and daughter-in-law, Betty. He loved to fish and continued until he was 100. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rubye Woodham Marchinton; daughter, Linda Kay Marchinton; and brothers, Charles and Leonard Marchinton. He is survived by Larry and Betty of Jefferson, Ga.; a grandson, Forrest Buckley Marchinton and wife, Dee, and great grandson, Ian, of Waynesboro, Ga., and nieces and nephews. Cyril was a quiet, hard-working man of honesty, integrity and Faith; a good friend and always ready to help. This wonderful man was loved and will be greatly missed. A graveside service was held in Edgewater, Fla., Friday, Oct. 3. Settle-Wilder Funeral Home, New Smyrna Beach, Florida was in charge. |
