A NICE START
Bears edge by Effingham County

      It all came down to the last seconds in Burke County's 16- 14 win over Effingham County last Friday night. With 3.2 seconds left on the clock and the Bears ahead by just 2 points, the Rebels lined up to kick a field goal through the posts and win the game.

THURSDAY'S FOE
      Next stop: Ware County High School, home of last year's AAAA state runner-up. Burke County High School will tackle perhaps the toughest team on its schedule Thursday night when they travel to Waycross. The Ware County Gators are coming off a 24-0 loss to AAAAA Coffee County last weekend.

      Burke County vs. Ware County 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 4 @ Ware County High Though forecasters are not yet sure what areas will be affected by Hurricane Hanna, school officials opted to play it safe and reschedule the game for Thursday.

      The Spartans had a total of 239 yards rushing on 39 attempts, while Briarwood gained 273 on 57 carries.      Area youth golfers recently competed in the Waynesboro Country Club's Junior Club Championship, with a group bringing in first place trophies. First place winners for their age groups included, from left, Ragan Bailey, Rylie Marchman, Grant Liles and Jay Mobley, all of Waynesboro.

Fulghum, Bradley win Rotary classic

      Jack Fulghum and Kyle Bradley shot a two-day total of 114 (30 under par) to take the Waynesboro Rotary Golf Classic held at the Waynesboro Country Club Aug. 23-24. Larry Keller and his son, John, finished in second place, and brothers Wade and Mitch Marchman came in third.
