Mr. Stiles Allen Mitchell

Mr. Stiles Allen Mitchell, 42, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Waynesboro, Ga., and the beloved son of Jane Mitchell and the late Thomas Mitchell Sr. of Waynesboro died Saturday, July 19, 2008.

A memorial service was held at 4 p.m. Monday, July 21, at the First United Methodist Church, 802 Liberty St. Waynesboro, with the Rev. Sam Vernon and the Rev. Wayne Dixon officiating.

The family received friends immediately following the service in the church social hall.

Mr. Mitchell, a native of Waynesboro, graduated from Edmund Burke Academy in 1983 and attended Georgia Southern University. After college, he began his professional golfing career in 1993.

Stiles Mitchell, affectionately known as "Big Daddy," was the winner of numerous long drive competitions, including the 1996 Master Blaster Long Drive Competition featuring 24 of the longest drivers in the country; named Most Improved Player on the 1997 Hooter's Tour and winner of the 1997 Spenser Communications Classic.

During his rookie year on the Nike Tour (Nationwide Tour), he captured his second career win at the 1998 Nike Permian Basin Open in Odessa, Texas.

John Maginnes of PGATOUR.com called Stiles, "one of the great characters to ever play professional golf.

The big man from Louisiana, rounded by gumbo and stronger than a black bear, could pound on it. His great gift to the world was his ability to make all of those around him laugh." He was known for his huge heart that cared and gave to many; he will be missed.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by two children, Ella Grace age 4, Jack Henry age 3, and their mother, Tiffany Thom Mitchell, of Baton Rouge, La.; a sister Frances Ann Evans, of Thomson, Ga.; a brother Thomas Mitchell Jr. (Julie) of Waynesboro; three nephews, Daniel Evans, Michael Evans and Mitch Mitchell; two nieces, Mollie and Sara Katherine Mitchell; and his beloved dog "Huey."

In lieu of flowers a Trust Fund has been established at Regions Bank, 3003 College Drive, Baton Rouge, LA, 70808 (225- 922-8050), and First National Bank of Waynesboro, 626 Liberty St. Waynesboro, Ga. 30830 (706-554-8100).
