Test scores take a big leap We learned this week that 71 percent of BCHS juniors who took the Georgia High School Graduation Test passed it on the first try. That compares to only 59 percent last year. In addition, more than 25 percent scored at the "pass-plus" level, which means they did exceptionally well. BCHS Principal Wayne Hickman is justifiably proud of the accomplishment and points to the fact that almost 80 percent of the students passed the troublesome science portion of the test, an area in which students statewide have had problems. Last year only 60 percent of local students passed that section. These are important numbers. They reflect the effort being put forth by the students, teachers and administrators to improve success rates of upcoming graduates. In particular, it is indicative of the success of radical changes that have been implemented in the way the school's curriculum is presented to its students. We appreciate the courage shown by the school administration in making those changes. |
