Sowing the seed

Staff - Anne Marie Kyzer
Blakeney Elementary School third-graders

Jacob Blankenship, Holland Wiersma and Makenzie Long plant cotton seeds during the

Ag in Classroom event held at the Southeast

Georgia Agricultural Research and Education Center near Midville. The Burke County Extension

Service, along with a host of volunteers,

welcomed around 350 youngsters from BES, S.G.A. Elementary, Faith Christian School and

Edmund Burke Academy last week to show them where their food and clothing originate.

Aside from hearing about row crops, the

students learned about outdoor and boating

safety, gardening, dairy cattle and more. They will return in the fall as fourth graders to see the

crops harvested. At right, Amaya Bonner

vigorously shakes a bag of ice, milk, sugar and flavoring to make ice cream as her partner Katie

Wattenbarger roots her on.
