Looking Back 10 years ago: May 6, 1996 The Liberty Square Historic Association was organized to promote and market the Waynesboro downtown business district. George DeLoach was unopposed for reelection as State Representative for District 119. Chris Youmans, Betsy Fowler and Ronda Wright, all BCHS juniors, were selected as finalists for the Georgia Governor's Honors Program. 25 years ago: May 4, 1983 Plans were announced to build a new Hardee's restaurant on the site of the old Masonic Lodge on Liberty Street. Several property owners threatened a lawsuit if the City of Waynesboro failed to correct drainage problems on land between Shadrack Street and Academy Avenue in the 500 block area. Piggly Wiggly decided against exercising its option on the property because of the problems. 50 years ago: May 8, 1958 Winners in the Bicycle Derby sponsored by the Waynesboro Recreation Commission were Jimmy Hillis, Fred Cates, Bud North and Eddie Faircloth. Midville High School planned graduation exercises for 12 seniors. Dr. Gerald B. Robins, president of Augusta Junior College, was to be the commencement speaker. Linda Thurman was the valedictorian and Louie Mays was salutatorian. 75 years ago: May 5, 1933 Trustees of Waynesboro City Schools re-elected W.T. Knox as superintendent. Sixty Burke County boys were selected to work in the federal government's re-forestation program. Sims Service Stores announced plans to open in Waynesboro, adding to the 35 stores already operated by the South Georgia firm. |
