Comments from our readers: In reference to the comment about the inmates cleaning up roadways - I'm all for it, they need to do something besides sitting in jail spending our tax money that could go to something more productive. So let them clean up the county. I noticed the other day how trash has blown out of the dumpsters. Some are a mess. So let them rake and freshen up around them every few months, as well as picking up trash along the roads and cleaning cemeteries. Let's do things like that for Burke County so we can stay proud of it! Thank you to the Sardis Police Department for all your hard work during Tour de Georgia. I was very impressed with how smoothly everything went. Ssshhh! You are not doing the people of Midville a great service by broadcasting in your paper the fact that we have very little police protection now. Please refrain from doing this in the future. Congratulations to all the artists and performers who participated in Edmund Burke Academy's Spartan Spoleto. I had no idea we have so many talented students right here in our community. Midville had a great Police Chief … his name was Stephen Weddon. I find it odd that Midville City Council hires men who they know don't qualify. You would think in the process of hiring they would know to ask for certifications. I think the big problem with Midville is not the speeding tickets issued but rather the city council that hires and fires their workers. Midville should replace some of its city council people and let law enforcement do their job. If you're speeding, then slow down or otherwise pay the ticket. You can not holler speed trap each time you do wrong and get caught Please hire former principal Mr. Willis back to straighten out our high school! One thing is for sure, we wouldn't have to have video cameras and we wouldn't be a small step away from being a Butler or Josey. People...get out and vote so you can have a say so in our board of education. To the pleased parents of a little leaguer: The man making the calls at the boy's midget field at the recreation department is Angelo Thomas. He is a person of many talents and great kindness. He says he calls the games "for the kids … so they'll enjoy playing and learn sportsmanship." He appreciates your email at overthefence.com. I continue to see comments about the Sardis police being in other places besides Sardis. Also, you will see the Burke County deputies at the Jet in Sardis all the time - but at least the police are around. Girard residents are also taxpayers, and we can't get police to patrol out here for nothing. Even if they are called it takes 45 minutes to two hours to get here. The crime has already happened or you have to deal with it. It would be nice if several issues would be addressed in Girard such as speeding (drag racing), child safety, the property of the people in Girard and animal safety (care). We really need a police patrolling the Girard area so we would feel a little safer. Shame on the recreation department for allowing a stacked EBA team to compete in baseball. If EBA wants exclusive all star teams, EBA needs to expand its sporting arena. The recreation teams need to be diversified - both by race and skill level. All children and parents need to learn how to lose AND WIN, gracefully! Lord knows I'm not complaining about Sheriff Coursey using prisoners to pick up litter … that's what the prisoners should be doing all over the county, not just on Farmers Bridge Road . My complaint is why did it take pretty near 28 years for him to do it?' And then on election year? Any questions? I will have you to know that I have been a member of the crusade to stop litter long before this was initiated. I do not throw my trash out the window of my car. I put it in a bag and dispose of it when I get home. It's the lowlife and the illiterate who throw their beer cans and trash out of their cars. Most of them own nothing, don't pay taxes and care less what the countryside looks like. And chances are if you went to where they live, there would be nothing but garbage all around their homes.
