Three Burke County High girls earned their spot to compete at the state track meet in Albany next weekend.
Freshman Chardae Washington and sophomores Jaquetta Chandler and Alaytra Carswell qualified for the state meet after placing in the top two of their events in Region 3-AAA.
Chandler ran her best time yet in the mile, 6 minutes, 5 seconds, to defend her title as the region champion in the event. Last year, she won the event with a time of 6:07.
Washington hurled her way to a region championship in the shot put with a distance of 35 feet, ½ inch.
Speedster Carswell will get two chances to compete at the state meet after placing second in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. She ran down a time of 12.41 seconds in the 100 and 25.47 in the 200. She turned in the fastest 100 time in the region as a freshman last year but was disqualified for a uniform violation. This year, a technicality didn't stop her.
As a team the Lady Bears claimed third in the region, a remarkable feat considering most girls on the team are fresh- men and sophomores.
"I was really pleased with the girls' efforts at the region meet," coach Purvis Dukes said. "Competition was stiff, and anytime you go in with a majority of your girls being freshmen and sophomores and make a showing like this, you have something to build on."
