Weekend blaze destroys home
By Elizabeth Billips lizbillips@yahoo.com

A Burke County family lost their home after a fire broke out in the kitchen and spread throughout.

According to EMA Chief Rusty Sanders, firefighters were dispatched to 245 Timberwood Drive just after midnight Friday.

"The damage was extensive," he said, noting that the blaze appears to have begun as a grease fire from an unattended pot on the stove.

Neither the homeowner, Joyce Godbee, nor her three teenage children were hurt, he said.

The family lost everything, and neighbors say they are collecting donations of clothing and money to assist them.

As part of its community involvement program, OMI, the city's wastewater contractor, is paying for the family to stay at the Jameson Inn for 11 days.
