Comments from our readers: I would like to put forward some suggestions that I would like to see in a new sheriff. Number one, I would like to see someone in the department who is qualified to run the Breathalyzer machine. Number two, I would like to see every car with a radar and a deputy qualified to run it. Number three, I would like to see some satellite stations in Burke County so all the deputies are not just around Waynesboro. Number four, I would like to see some of the prisoners out picking up trash along the roads to make Burke County look a little better. That way, the prisoners would not get bored watching TV and playing basketball. And number five, and most of all, I would like to see a new sheriff. To those that are opposed to inmates picking up litter, I ask, do you want them to put it back? Or better yet bring your trash bags next weekend and y'all pick up the litter. If you want to go frog gigging in town, please come to Dogwood Drive to the new pond the city created between the Blanchards' and the Nichols'. This pond is infested with mosquitoes and will soon have snakes when the warm weather comes. If this is the way the city cleans up a problem they created 25 years ago, God help us. Please, City of Waynesboro - come and clean up this mess you have created in our neighborhood! I would like to make a comment about the complaint of our sheriff, Greg Coursey. He is a good Christian man and has been good for all the people in Burke County. He is only one man and he cannot fix the drug problem by himself. What are the people of Burke County doing when they could report all this drug action when they see it going on instead of turning their heads and keeping quiet? Keep up the good work Sheriff Coursey. We appreciate you and your department. I don't know who is calling games at the boys' midget field at the rec. dept., but he is great. He puts so much enthusiasm into it that it makes the kids and us parents feel like we are at more than just a little league game. Thanks and keep up the good work! The Greene family of Hephzibah, (Tammy, Derrick and Emerald) wishes to thank everyone for supporting us through the loss of our home due to the tornado that hit Burke County on March 15th ... Special thanks to the Forest Hill Church Family, the Augusta Chapter of The American Red Cross, The Church of Jesus Christ., Clark Grove Baptist Church, WRDW News 12, Gracewood Hospital, HeadStart Employees of Augusta, Life In The River Worship Center and to all of our family and friends. We are on the road to recovery, and we appreciate everything that everyone has done for us. Please support the American Red Cross - they were a big help to our family. Also, prepare yourselves and your family for disaster and always have a plan in case a disaster ever hits your home. I know that we will! I live on Corley Road and I would like to thank Sheriff Coursey for his help with the trash pick-up. I hope everyone notices how much better the area looks and will try to keep it looking nice. Last week someone made a complaint about the Roman nu- IIII for "4" on the courthouse clock. When the recent renovations were done, much research and attention was given to restore the clock to its original plans. It was traditional for the number "4" to be represented by IIII on clocks, especially in the 19th century. We went back to the older style when restoring the hands and clock face. If one researches the issue, you will find that it is equally correct to use IV or IIII to represent the number "4," but most often IIII is used on clock and watch faces. To the person who complained that Sheriff Coursey was using prisoners to pick up litter in an election year, I hope that you are planning to personally join the crusade against litter and not just sit around and complain about what is already being done. I would suggest that you pick any road in the county and begin this Saturday morning bright and early. Wear comfortable shoes because you'll be doing lots of walking; wear gloves because you'll be picking up some disgusting items (use your imagination); and bring plastic bags. Bring lots and lots of bags. Write to "Over the Fence" next week and let us know of your progress.
