From the Blotter

Mad cow

An angry bull didn't take well to the deputy who tried to steer him off the highway last Saturday.

According to a report filed at the Burke County Sheriff's Office, the large Angus was seen wandering up and down Griffin Road and taking an occasional turn down the middle of Seven Oaks Road.

The deputy tried to steer him off the road, but the irritated bull rammed the front end of the patrol car, causing a small dent.

After several attempts, the bull finally broke through a fence and headed for the hills.

Charges against the bull's owner are pending.

The pits

Aggressive pit bulls caused some big problems in Burke County last week.

On Tuesday, a resident reported that a neighbor's pit bulls chased him every day as he attempted to walk down River Road.

Two days earlier, a Waynesboro man was also chased, then bitten.

Police interviewed him at Burke Medical Center where he was being treated for a dog bite to his hand.

He told officers he'd been walking down Martin Luther King Drive when the pit bull crossed the street and attacked him.

Fixin' flats

A number of Burke County residents spent their weekend fixing flat tires.

Between Thursday and Saturday, nine residents reported damage to their vehicles.

While slashed tires were the most popular complaint, some said bricks or beer bottles were thrown through their windshields or their paint jobs were keyed.

Nearly all of the cars were vandalized outside of homes and businesses in Waynesboro.

Shop and shove

A Sardis convenience store clerk was injured when shoplifting juveniles shoved him into a cooler.

According to a report filed at the Burke County Sheriff's Office, a group of kids crowded into the Watering Hole Friday night and created a diversion while one of the boys concealed a can of beer in his shorts.

The clerk tried to stop the boy as he fled, but was thrown against a cooler, resulting in a gash above his eye.

The clerk got up and chased the kids into the parking lot, but was nearly hit with the can of stolen beer as he got close. After returning inside, he realized the kids had also stolen a box containing around 350 pieces of bubble gum.

The hole story?

A Waynesboro man flagged down police Tuesday night after someone opened fire at him.

According to the police report, the victim said he was leaving McDonalds and turning onto Ninth Street when another motorist got out of his car and started firing.

While the report did not indicate whether the gunman and victim knew each other, the officer did make note of a large bullet hole in the victim's trunk.
