BCMS students tour Vogtle
During a unit on energy, sixth grade students on Team 6R were asked about Plant Vogtle. Students cited that Vogtle was in Burke County, but few of them were able to make the connection between nuclear power and our own community. During the unit, students began to develop an understanding of nuclear power as a nebulas concept but still were unable to connect it to their every day lives. To make learning authentic for students and to increase their long-term memory, the students took a trip to Plant Vogtle. Sixth grade science teacher Cynthia Brogan said, "A majority of students cite nuclear power as one of the most dangerous forms of energy production. It is imperative to me as a teacher in Burke County to help students dispel this myth." During their trip, Mike McCracken, Southern Nuclear Corporate Communication Specialist, gave an extensive presentation about energy, how electricity is made and gave the students a better understanding of how Vogtle operates. After the presentation, Ellie Daniel, Southern Nuclear Communications Specialist, gave the students a detailed tour on their school bus around the plant. Daniel showed the students where the new nuclear reactors would be made and placed. Daniel said, "Having the new reactors would double the plant's workforce and make Vogtle one of the largest nuclear plants in the United States."
