Looking Back 10 years ago: April 8, 1998 Augusta attorney Duncan Wheale announced his candidacy for Superior Court Judge in the Augusta Judicial Circuit. He was the first candidate to seek the post being vacated by Judge Bernard Mulherin. The True Citizen and Chalker Printing moved their offices from 610 Academy Ave. (the old Coca-Cola bottling plant) to 601 E. Sixth St., joining Chalker Publishing Co. 25 years ago: April 6, 1983 Plans for the renovation of the 100 block of Seventh Street were being discussed by property owners and the Waynesboro City Council. The block had been a high crime area for a number of years. Nine people were injured in separate accidents over a twoweek periods in the county. Cheerleaders selected for the EBA Spartans for the 1983-84 school year were Ashley Harper, Suzanne Elliott, Hope Meeks, Susan Mims, Laura DeLoach, Tamera Toole, Wanda Murphey, Jancy Thorne and Kim Godbee. 50 years ago: April 10, 1958 With assets of $4,514,374, the Bank of Waynesboro was included in the 5,000 largest banks in the United States, placing 4,971 on the list. "Jailhouse Rock," starring Elvis Presley was playing at the Grand Theatre. 75 years ago: April 14, 1933 The Burke County Commission voted to apply for malaria control funds from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. New Rotary Club officers included president Roy B. Hargrove and secretary Dave Wallace. "The Great Ricado," billed as a "mystic marvel who knows all, sees all and tells all," was appearing live at the Grand Theatre. Admission was 10 cents for adults, 5 cents for children. |
