Inmate injured in jail fight
By Anne Marie Kyzer annemariek@thetruecitizen.com

An inmate who tried to break up a fight in the Burke County Jail ended up in the emergency room.

The victim needed 12 staples in his head to close the wound after fellow inmate Kevin Bernard Herndon, 24, pushed him against a cell and proceeded to punch and kick him.

Herndon was initially jailed on misdemeanor theft by taking and felony probation violation charges. He collected new charges of aggravated battery and probation violation after the beating on Friday, March 21.

Herndon continued to cause disruptions after he was separated from other inmates. In a solitary cell in the jail's nurse's station Monday, he broke off a sprinkler head, setting off the alarm. Additional charges will be filed for the incident involving the sprinkler, according to Major John Bush at the jail.
