Burke fares well against competition The Bears didn't back down against serious competition on the track last weekend. The Burke County High School boys track team placed second in the Greenbrier Relays, which included 12 teams from around the area. Several Burke County athletes turned in their best performances of the year in the process. The Lady Bears also had a good showing at the Greenbrier Relays. The young squad placed eighth in the field of 12 teams. "We were pleased with the efforts of several athletes on Saturday," coach Purvis Dukes said. "There was a ton of competition, and I think we did an outstanding job competing." Dukes added that several athletes improved their times and distances, and he looks forward to them continuing the trend to be competitive at the state level. The event also introduced the athletes to several events that varied from traditional track meets, such as the sprint medley, a distance medley and a 4 X 800 relay. BCHS will host the Burke County Relays Saturday. The meet will begin at 10 a.m., and Dukes encourages the community to come out and support the young athletes. FINISHES IN THE TOP FIVE
