Labor Commissioner seeks college interns State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond will offer internships for up to 80 college students, thanks to Georgia Department of Labor's 2008 Summer Internship Program. The program provides students at universities, colleges and technical colleges with practical work experience, an opportunity to earn school credit and a chance to make up to $1,225 this summer. "The internships have been highly successful in providing students with valuable experience in a real work environment," Thurmond said. "Interns work with the staff in the Georgia Department of Labor's career centers and vocational rehabilitation offices throughout the state, as well as in our central office in downtown Atlanta. Emphasis is placed on complementing the students' classroom learning with professional work experience, which will serve them very well as they plan and eventually begin their careers." Interns will work 25 hours per week for seven weeks between June 2 and Aug. 2, and will be paid semi-monthly. The program is open primarily to college sophomores, juniors and seniors presently enrolled in or accepted to a Georgia college, university or technical college, as well as to Georgia residents enrolled in similar schools in other states. Interns will be selected on the basis of their interests and areas of expertise that will be enhanced by work with the labor department, maturity level and access to one of the department's offices. Whenever possible, the selected interns will be allowed to choose the office where they will work. Applicants must submit an application and a one-page essay on "Rewards and Benefits of Interning at the Georgia Department of Labor." Applications are available at any Georgia Department of Labor office, on the department's Web site at www.dol.state.ga.us or by writing to Annie Hughley at the Georgia Department of Labor, Marketing and Community Relations, Suite 600, 148 Andrew Young International Blvd., N. E., Atlanta, GA 30303-1751. The deadline to apply is April 16. Applications should be mailed to Hughley at the above address or faxed to her at 404- 656-2683. Students selected for the internship will be notified via mail by May 25. |
