Waynesboro wins another historic grant
By Elizabeth Billips lizbillips@yahoo.com

Waynesboro is one of a dozen Georgia communities selected for the latest Federal Historic Preservation Grant award.

The $6,000 grant will fund a new publication: A Guide to Waynesboro Historic Preservation.

"This grant award will allow us to publish a single concise guide to Waynesboro's historic preservation efforts and the Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) review process," Downtown Development Director Andrea Stein said, calling the publication a "one stop shop" for property owners and government officials.

The guide will include detailed information regarding policy and procedure for the COA application review, using the design guidelines and tak- ing advantage of state and federal tax credits for rehabilitation/ restoration of historic property, as well as a district boundaries map with current zoning and the historic preservation ordinance.

The guide is expected to be complete by August 2009.

The city is currently working on another publication, the Design Guidelines handbook, which is funded by a $9,600 federal grant.

The handbook is specifically designed to help historic district property owners who want to change or renovate their structures.

According to Stein, the hands-on guidelines will help owners determine whether their proposed changes are compatible with the character of their structures and their neighborhoods.

Currently, the first draft of the Design Guidelines is available for public review at the Waynesboro Fire Department.

Since it's still a working draft, copies are not available.

After the handbook is completed and approved in late 2008, it will be available at several public locations and on CDs distributed through the city's downtown development office.
