Vogtle asks to build new reactors in Burke Southern Nuclear Operating Company filed an application with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission today (Monday) asking to build two new nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle in Burke County.
The Construction and Operating License (COL) application would give the company permission to build and operate the reactors, but the NRC will not likely issue a decision on the company’s application for two or three years. Southern Nuclear officials remain noncommittal about their decision to follow through with plans for new reactors at Plant Vogtle. They say approval of their application would keep options for nuclear energy open to the company as energy demands continue to increase.
