The Bears turned their record around on the baseball field last week.

The Burke County High School team (5-2) racked up three wins, two of them over AAAA schools.

"It was 180 degrees from the first two games, but we still have a ways to go," head coach Sean Tiernan said of his team's performance.

He added that pitchers Brandon Love and Trent Hillis threw the ball very well, keeping the Bears off the field and at the plate.

"The pitchers kept us in the game, and we were able to hit our way through to win," Tiernan said. "We're swinging the bat a lot better now and being more aggressive at the plate."

The Bears started off the week with a 10-0 win over Lakeside High School. Love (2-1) pitched the shutout, striking out 10 batters, walking 1 and allowing only 1 hit in five innings.

Daniel Braswell and Cole Thames led the Bears at the plate, each going 3-3. Braswell hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBIs, and Thames had 3 RBIs.

On Wednesday, the Bears traveled to Screven County High School and won 2-1.

Senior pitcher Hillis claimed the win. He struck out 13 batters, walked six and gave up just one hit in seven innings.

Despite sending just two runners around the bases in the game, Burke County had 10 hits.

Love went 3-3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Hillis went 2-3 and catcher Tyler Hammett was 1-3 with a double.

Burke County finished up the week with a 12-2 win over Evans High School.

Love struck out 8, walked 2 and allowed 5 hits in seven innings.

The Bears made serious contact at the plate with 15 hits.

Cody Bolden went 4-4 with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs. Zach Eubanks and Thames each went 3-5, and Braswell went 2-2. Hillis was 1-4 with an early three-run homer and another RBI later in the game.

The Bears played Lakeside again last night but scores were unavailable at press time.

Burke County faces Thomson High School today (Wednesday) at home and will play their first region game on Friday against Liberty County High School in Waynesboro.

Tiernan looks for a tough region opener against Liberty County, who returned several starters from last year including an All-State pitcher.
