Looking Back 10 years ago: March 18, 1998 The Burke County Hospital Authority and Health Span Inc. reached an agreement which would turn over management of the hospital to a group of local doctors. A public hearing would be necessary before the agreement could be finalized. A&W Oil Co. installed Waynesboro's first pay-at-the-pump gasoline service at the company's Chevron station on South Liberty Street. 25 years ago: March 16, 1983 Boggs Academy continued to operate even though a major source of its funding was being drastically reduced. The United Presbyterian Church cut the school's annual allocation from $200,000 to less than $70,000. A new left turn signal was installed at the intersection of Sixth and Liberty streets for motorist traveling east. J. Douglass Cates Jr. was named a partner in the accounting firm of Baird and Company of Augusta. 50 years ago: March 20, 1958 John J. Jones was the only candidate to qualify for the office of Judge of Ordinary. The office became vacant upon the resignation of F. S. Burney. Two Waynesboro High School students, Baynard Ellis and Charles Wallace, were scheduled to represent the county in the All-State Band in an Atlanta concert. 75 years ago: March 17, 1933 A review of the 1882 Waynesboro Business Directory showed the city had 11 lawyers, 10 merchants, five markets, six confectioners, three blacksmiths, three physicians, two printers, two druggists and two jewelers.
