A Waynesboro teen has been charged with shooting an Augusta man in the head, then burning his body near the Fifth Street Bridge.
Victor Levee Scott, 18, had been wanted since late December when he was identified in the Christmas Eve killing of 38- year-old Corwin Lemuel Lee.
For the past month, Scott has been in a New York jail on forgery and obstruction charges, but an alias prevented authorities from linking him to the murder, according to Lt. Scott Peebles, a violent crimes investigator for the Richmond County Sheriff 's Department.
Before Scott went on the lam, he'd been splitting time between his Highway 80 home in Burke County and a rented room at the Super Inn on Gordon Highway in Augusta.
"He was selling drugs out of his room," Lt. Peebles said, noting that 21-year-old Javell Leverett Gordon, who was also arrested for the murder, was involved in the drug operation.
Investigators believe that on Dec. 24, Scott and Gordon murdered Lee inside that room, then dumped his body in North Augusta and attempted to set it on fire.
Three days later, the charred and decaying body was found by a golf course mechanic near the River Club and Fifth Street Bridge.
Gordon was arrested within days of the gruesome find, but Scott eluded deputies until New York authorities finally made the connection on Monday.
Scott will be extradited to Richmond County on charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
